Mayor John A. Ostenburg was elected to his first four-year term in 1999. He was re-elected without opposition in 2003. In 2007, he was elected to an unprecedented third four-year term. He formerly served five years as a Part Forest Trustee and was State Representative from the 80th House District from 1993 to 1995.

Mayor Ostenburg is vice chairperson of the Abraham Lincoln National Airport Commission (ALNAC) and also serves as a member of the Community & Economic Development Committee for the National League of Cities (NLC) and as the Cook County at-large member of the Executive Committee of the South Suburban Mayors & Managers Association (SSMMA).

In 2009, he received the Diversity Award presented by Diversity Inc., for his longstanding efforts to promote racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual-orientation harmony and equality.
